joined Saatchi & Saatchi in 1974 as a graduate trainee; appointed to the London Board in 1982 and made a Group Account Director in 1986. Highlights included working on campaigns for BP, Dunlop, and British Airways, which won many UK and International creative awards. My other blue chip clients included Procter & Gamble, Black & Decker and Capital Radio.
In 1990, I joined the integrated marketing agency for the Publicis Groupe – Impact FCA! As Client Services Director, I won new business from Air Canada, Northwest Airlines, Halfords and Disney. In 1993, the agency won over 40 creative awards across three major disciplines: advertising, direct marketing and sales promotion – a unique achievement at the time.
In 1994, I moved to the Central Office of Information (COI) as Director of Advertising; promoted to Director of Marketing Communications in 1997, joined the Senior Civil Service in 1998 and appointed Deputy Chief Executive in 2001. As DCE I was responsible for the competitiveness of COI’s offer, industry best practice and commercial partner relations. I sat on many government and industry committees, chaired the government Centralised Media Buying Group and was a founder member of DWP’s ‘Images of Disability’ Steering Group. In 2008 I originated publication of the book ‘How Public Service Advertising Works’ in partnership with WARC.
Since retiring from full time employment in 2010, I set up my own business as a marketing services consultant to creative, media and market research agencies. I was made an Honorary Fellow of the IPA in 2010, I am a Partner at NABS and a Member of D&AD.
