VISITORS TO HAT DURING 2009 AND BEYOND...

We received 213 visitors through the door in 2009 - and what a variety there was! Academic Dan Navon from Columbia University, New York State, looked into consumerism in the early 20th century. From Ireland came Norma Kelly of the Institute of Technology, investigating gender roles in the family as depicted in TV food ads. David Clampin from Liverpool John Moores University was studying the famous Mr Cube of Tate & Lyle sugar fame and Elizabeth Wood from the Society of Apothecaries, Wellcome Institute, was looking at the history of milk.


Dr Ali Haggett of University of Exeter was exploring psychological/psychosomatic illness in men since WW2 and Jonathan Trench worked on some thought provoking research into Shell PR response to the classic “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson. Suffragettes and fashion were studied by Louise Barker from Royal College of Art while Dr Jamie Medhurst was looking for book content on the early years of TV (1923-1939); Timothy Bennett from University of Nottingham researched his dissertation on Pears Soap and that brand’s wider advertising appeal to consumers.

HAT has a close relationship with Norwich University College of the Arts and Norwich City College and students visited HAT throughout the year to study such subjects as Guinness brand identity, changing attitudes to women since Women’s Lib and the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act, a study of older women in advertising using the role model of Twiggy as a guide. Caroline Bailey visited to arrange several intern placements for 2010.

Other visitors included Mark Rasdall of IPA, Brian Jaquest who made marvellous donations to the archive and Mary Cowling, of Royal Holloway. Philip Preston of Chartered Institute of Marketing advised on CIM’s training record and discussed how HAT might contribute. Chief Executive of The Advertising Association, Tim Lefroy accompanied by Amanda McKenzie of Aviva, was delighted to see the AA’s large collection of historical material while Amanda marvelled at the early 1900s leaflets, speeches, dinner menues and other ephemera in the WACL (Women in Advertising Communications, London), collection.

As part of our ongoing relationship with local schools and colleges, (see report on the new Diploma in media studies being crafted here), we have received students from Sir John Leman High School to learn about top brands and how they are packaged for the public. Within the space of 2 hours, these novices were able to give a brief talk on brand values and present those to an audience. Other academic visitors were University of East Anglia and Steve Beckingham from Kirkley High School, Lowestoft who is instrumental in various projects with young people being undertaken at HAT.
