THANKING ALL THOSE WHO HAVE MADE GIFTS TO HAT
  • The Paul Arden Archive
Comprising original art work and printed proofs from every phase of Arden’s career, dating from his early student days at Beckenham Art School. He worked at several agencies including Doyle Dane Bernbach, Lintas and Colman & Partners before joining Saatchi & Saatchi in 1979 as executive creative director until 1992. A maverick with an “extravagant commitment to detail”, he oversaw campaigns for British Airways, InterCity, Fuji, Castlemaine XXXX, Anchor Butter and the Silk Cut print ads featuring a slashed sheet of purple silk.

Virtually every Silk Cut advertisement produced from 1983 is here, each showing Arden’s insistence on using top photographers to get exactly the right artistic effects. He also invented the slogans “The Independent. It is – are you?” and “The car in front is a Toyota”. After Saatchi’s he set up the film and commercial production company Arden Sutherland-Dodd in Soho and representative work from this period has been compiled on DVDs. His three philosophical books written from 2003 God Explained in a Taxi Ride, It’s Not how Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be and Whatever you Think, Think the Opposite have been presented to HAT’s library. Arden’s complete library of commercials on video tape eventually will be matched up with his important series of ideas books later in 2009.
Donated by Toni Arden, West Sussex

The acceptance of this generous archival donation from the Arden family reflects HAT’s policy to collect the archives of influential figures within the advertising industry. Similar recent acquisitions include the papers of Ann Burdus CBE, Mo Drake, Stephen King, Peter Marsh, John Treasure, John Webster and Harry Henry.
