Butlin's Collections Assistant


The History of Advertising Trust (HAT) is looking for an enthusiastic Collections Assistant to work as part of the Butlin’s Heritage Collection Project team. Working towards successful delivery of the project, you will support the Project Co-ordinator in all aspects of collections management, specifically the re-packaging and cataloguing of the Butlin’s photographic negatives collection.

In 1936 Sir Billy Butlin opened his first holiday camp at Skegness and changed the face of British holidays. Our story is something we are proud of. That’s why we have partnered with the History of Advertising Trust, who allow us to make sure our history and heritage is protected and preserved for the delight of future generations.

This archive project aims to unlock the rich nostalgia in the stories of the people who made Butlin’s great. From Sir Billy Butlin himself, the Butlin’s famous Redcoats, thousands of dedicated team members and millions of Great British holiday makers, this partnership will allow treasured Butlin’s memories to be remembered and relived by future generations for many years to come.

The Butlin’s archive story will also help inform the future development of our three resorts in Bognor Regis, Minehead and Skegness and continue to lead the authentic creative development of our brand. Over the coming years the partnership will make available our historic PR and advertising campaigns, film, photography and memorabilia to be explored by the nation online.

The Butlin’s Heritage Collection was re-located from our resort in Bognor Regis to HAT in several consignments over 2015-16. A process of cataloguing and digitisation is well underway with items being prioritised against their need to inform Brand and Marketing projects as well as Resort Developments. Many significant items will also be available to view online.

The role



The negatives represent the surviving archive of Butlin’s Photographic Services department from their Bognor Regis resort (early 1960s) and provide a fascinating insight into all aspects of the Butlin’s holiday camp experience during this period.  You will be responsible for preserving and re-packaging the negatives with the support of HAT’s volunteer team and for cataloguing the negatives, ahead of digitisation, under the direction of the Butlin’s Project Co-ordinator. There will also be the opportunity to assist with research, outreach and digitisation activities connected with the Butlin’s Heritage Collection project.

The History of Advertising Trust is a national registered educational charity located in Norfolk, with a mission to promote learning and creative excellence by preserving and celebrating the advertising heritage of the UK. This includes cataloguing and preservation work to the highest possible standard that enables access to all for study and research. 

The job is a full-time nine month contract, working 40 hours a week, with a salary of £16,000 p.a. pro rata, 25 days holiday pro rata plus bank holidays.
