At the History of Advertising Trust we preserve and celebrate the heritage of British brand communication by maintaining an extensive archive and using our collections in social and educational projects.

HAT was founded in 1976 as an archive to the advertising industry and has since grown to embrace all forms of brand communication. We hold an impressive range of material – from industry collections such as Ogilvy & Mather, JWT, The Advertising Association and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, through to iconic British brand archives such as Butlin’s, Hovis, Heinz and McVities.

HAT has grown impressively since its early days at temporary premises in London, and now encompasses over 8000 square feet of dedicated space at our base in Raveningham, Norfolk where we have been since 1992.

We are a charitable trust (registered no.276194) with a mission to promote learning and creative excellence by making our collections accessible for research, education and public benefit. We do this through cataloguing and digitisation, public engagement projects and the creation of education resources. HAT’s activities are funded by our archive client services and the donations of industry bodies and individuals.
