Foote Cone Belding (FCB)

History

1873- USA, London

In 1873 Daniel Lord opened his agency in Chicago USA and in 1881 he was joined by Ambrose Thomas to form Lord & Thomas. In 1898 Albert Lasker joined them and he eventually became head of the company until his retirement in 1942. In 1928 its first office outside the US was opened in London. In 1942 Lasker sold the company to his three top managers Emerson Foote in New York, Fairfax Cone in Chicago and Don Belding in Los Angeles and the company name was changed to Foote, Cone Belding in 1943. They continued to handle large accounts such as American Tobacco Co, Frigidaire, Kimberly-Clark, Pepsodent, Sunkist and other leading brands.
FCB is now part of the Interpublic Group which brought it together with Draft in 2006 to become Draftfcb. Frys
The UK FCB advertising archive was rescued by HAT from the agency's London offices during re-organisation in the late 1990s.

Scope

A wide-ranging print collection dating from the 1940s to the 80s for brands diverse as Ferguson agricultural machinery (1940s), Watneys Pale Ale and Max Factor cosmetics (1970s). The FCB guardbooks for BOAC, BEA and BA record the social and aviation history of these British airlines from the 1940s to the age of Concorde.

Formats: Over 300 guardbooks containing advertising proofs and cuttings.
