Baxter, Stanley
History
Stanley Baxter established the Baxter Studio at 122 Fleet Street, London1905, moving to 27 Chancery Lane by 1909, then to Craven House Kingsway in 1910. Between 1910 and 1912 it merged with another business to form the Norfolk Studio and in January 1914 formed a subsidiary company called the Advertiser's Studio at 33 Chancery Lane. He later operated as Baxter Service from 1 Bloomsbury Court, High Holborn, then at 6 New Court.
He produced work for many clients, including advertising agencies such as Morison's, Saward Baker, Spottiswoode Dixon and Hunting and S H Benson. In 1922 Baxter was introduced to the artist Tom Purvis (1888-1957) a successful poster designer famous for his LNER travel posters during the 1920s and 1930s and who was also commissioned by S H Benson.
The Stanley Baxter Archive was donated to HAT by the artist's son, David Baxter, in 1983.

A remarkable collection of client correspondence, original artwork, published advertisement proofs and cuttings, posters and publications reflecting the career of this prolific artist. It includes advertisements for the studio, in its different forms, and press cuttings of articles concerning Stanley Baxter, his business and its output. The advertisement section includes material relating to early phonographic equipment and record companies (e.g.HMV and Zonophone), Cerebos Salt, Austin Reed Ltd, Morris Singer, Dewars' Whisky and Elizabeth Arden. There is an important drawing, commissioned by The Publicity Club of London, of portrait caricatures of members and guests attending its annual dinner c.1930.
