International Association of Advertising Managers
History
The IAMA was founded in 1932 as 'The Advertising Managers' Association' or AMA. It was founded on the basis that it should be 'open exclusively to Advertising Managers and Assistant Advertising Managers and that no members of any firm of advertising agents and no newspaper representatives be allowed to become members. The original committee was made up of Advertising Managers from large companies such as ICI, Sandeman's, Grape-Nuts, Gramophone Co, Solignum, Virol etc.
The initial proposals were for monthly meetings with talks on such topics as "What we want from the press", "National versus Provincial Press" and "Do small spaces pay?" Later meetings reflected new technology such as colour printing or radio advertising.
In 1938 the AMA became the 'Incorporated Advertising Managers' Association' and there was a celebratory Banquet at the Trocadero, London and an AGM attended by 70 members.
The "Managers" in the name was changed to "Management" in the 1970s but more recent publicity material states that the Association was "run by Managers of Advertising for Managers of Advertising to strengthen their individual skills and promote their professional interests". It was a "constituent organisation of the Advertising Association... The IAMA's president has a permanent place on the Advertising Association's Council and the Committee of Marketing Organisations."
The Association was wound up in 1998.
