Chartered Institute of Public Relations; CIPR

History

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations is the UK's leading public relations industry professional body with 9000 members. The Institute represents and serves the interests of people working in public relations in the UK and abroad. It offers access to information, advice and support, and provides networking and training opportunities through a wide variety of events, conferences and workshops.
The CIPR is the largest association of its kind in Europe. It is a member of the European PR federation CERP (Confederation Europeanne des Relations Publiques) and a founding member of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communications Management.
The Institute of Public Relations first met on 10 February 1948, at the St Bride Institute Fleet Street. This was as a result of meetings in 1946 and the establishment of 'a standing conference of Public Relations Officers in November that year.

From the beginning the Institute was involved in four broad areas of activity: Professional Practices, Education, Programmes and Public Relations. The Professional Practices Committee was first established in 1956, leading to the Institute's adoption of its first Code of Professional Conduct in 1963.

From its incorporation in 1962 the IPR was recognised by the Government (The Board of Trade) as the official representative body of public relations in Britain. It was awarded Chartered status by the Privy Council in 2005.
