We are delighted to welcome Paul Bainsfair as a new patron of The History of Advertising Trust. Paul’s advertising career began at Saatchi & Saatchi in 1977. Ten years later he was made CEO. In 1991, he co-founded Bainsfair Sharkey Trott (BST). In 1998, BST was acquired by Omnicom and merged with TBWA where Paul became Chairman of TBWA UK and President, TBWA Europe. In 2009, he became Chairman of Iris Worldwide, the UK’s largest independent integrated network. Paul has also been the Non-Exec Chairman of Lean Mean Fighting Machine. In 2011, Paul was appointed Director General of the IPA.
“ I am delighted to become a patron of History of Advertising Trust. I had been aware of HAT for many years but since becoming Director General of the IPA I have learnt so much more about the invaluable role HAT plays in our industry. In this digital age it’s easy to assume that you can Google anything you are looking for and there it will be. Not so. There’s only one place that holds a comprehensive record of advertising’s rich past and that’s HAT. And it goes beyond copies of old ads. There are gems such as the original creative briefs for famous campaigns and storyboards of early versions of TV spots like the Smash Martians. My personal favourite is the actual Memo sent by Jeremy Bullmore to the JWT TV Department in the mid 1960s, encouraging them to try out a young Director called Ridley Scott”.
Paul sits on the boards of RAJAR/ASBOF/BASBOF/ BARB and Advertising Week (Europe). He describes himself as an ad man and a farmer. He is married to Sophie and has three children, Bruno, Ted and Phoebe. They live in Holland Park and Wiltshire.
