ITV 60th Anniversary
22nd September 2015 marked the 60th Anniversary since the first ITV programmes were broadcast.
Gibbs SR, the first UK TV commercial broadcast on 22nd September 1955
Until 1955, only the BBC broadcast television programmes in the UK and TV was limited to a handful of stations that only broadcast during certain times of day. Independent television brought viewers a choice of programmes for the first time and commercials became a part of the nation’s TV viewing experience, a window onto the new world of mass produced packaged goods, cars and airline travel. As a young account executive at Ogilvy and Mather former HAT Trustee, Archie Pitcher CBE, was there at the beginning of what is now the global medium for building brands. Archie was part of the team that handled the Batchelors account whose advertisement followed the very first to be broadcast for Gibbs SR Toothpaste. Archie said:
“When the image of the brand is effective and its distribution strong that's when clever and ground breaking advertising will reap sales benefits. For the population at large advertising delivers choice, entertainment, information and subsidises a great proportion of the media particularly television”.
HAT played a key role in marking the 60th anniversary celebrations in providing advertisement archive resources for broadcasters and agencies that were keen to showcase the best examples of the TV advertising over the past six decades. The public response to the history of advertising during this period evidenced the huge appeal for nostalgic consideration of the industry’s creative genre.
