HAT goes on show

With more than 20,000 ads now showcased on HAT’s new website and access to our online catalogue developing daily,  most  of our ‘contact’ with clients, agencies, academics and researchers  is done conveniently and swiftly via email. But as 2016 is HAT’s 40th anniversary year, we’ve got a lot to shout about and were delighted to stage a special, free exhibition highlighting some of HAT’s fascinating collections throughout August at The Forum, Norwich.

1976 also saw the foundation of another archive in Norfolk – the UEA’s  East Anglian Film Archive, who shared the Forum’s  massive Digital Gallery with HAT to showcase some unique gems from the archives.

HAT produced some special films for the exhibition working with some of their client archives and some of the stories behind iconic, well known brands and campaigns.

Productions showing the origin and development of the HOVIS name and brand advertising from 1886 thru to the award winning ‘Go On Lad’ ad in 2008,  the early days of BUTLIN’s  from 1936 and the  showreel of award winning ads through the last 4 decades proved very popular. Some great discoveries uncovered in the JWT London agency archive told the stories behind the making of Mr Kipling, the ‘invention’ of teabags and the early directorial debut of Ridley Scott. HAT staff also presented a programme of weekly lunchtime talks on Hovis, Butlin’s and the work of HAT.

The exhibition was well received with more than 14,500 visitors and with coverage in Press, on local BBC Radio and ITV news, was a rewarding event ensuring more people got to know about HAT and the valuable work we do preserving the past and inspiring future generations.
