Education Summit 2020
HAT were delighted to welcome 13 academics from across the UK to their Education Summit at London South Bank University on 19th February 2020 and were very grateful to Dr Helen Powell for kindly arranging to host the Summit and organise a delicious lunch for us all. With leaders in a variety of subjects including Advertising & Design, History, Branding, Promotional Culture, Art Direction and Marketing and covering all levels from Foundation to PhD, the summit offered a welcome opportunity for HAT to give an update on their ever increasing content and collections and highlight the projects delivered since the last summit in July 2017.
The delegates at the Education Summit
It was a busy Agenda with contributions from guest speakers - delegate Sally Chan, BSc (Hons) MBA Leeds University who teaches MA Advertising and Marketing and MA Advertising and Design students presented on
'The role of the archive in educational teaching' highlighting how she uses HAT in her teaching but also as a valuable resource for her own PhD research.
James Best - past Chairman of one of London's biggest agencies and the UK Advertising Association, currently Chair of CAP and of Credos and one of HAT's Trustees reflected on the
'The importance of HAT’s archive to the industry‘ and how practitioners, whilst they value the archive, tend not to focus so much on the past but more on what is new, fresh and different. Using HAT more in the Education of the next generation of practitioners, he suggested, would aim to bridge that gap.
HAT's Director, Richard Powell reported that HAT was now the largest archive of british advertising in the world following the acquisition of the archive of the leading independent global marketing and media consultancy Ebiquity in 2019 - and showcased some of the big brand collections and preservation work carried out for Butlin's and Heinz and a number of brands whose collections HAT had rescued from the hands of receivers
Group discussions at the summit
Action points from 2017 had been for HAT to focus on delivering more oral history material and resource packs for students. Project Manager, Jane Jarvis presented an overview of
Inspiring Minds, the filmed interview project, supported by an HLF grant, featuring Adland legends which was launched in September 2018 and the subsequent production of HAT's first series of podcasts based on the
Inspiring Minds interviews in spring 2019 . Writer and co-producer of these podcasts, Jack Meggitt-Phillips also joined the summit speakers to expand on the thinking behind these podcasts and their value as a learning resource for students of all ages. Delegates confirmed they had been using the
Inspiring Minds film clips and podcasts in their teaching and were delighted to hear that Jack was currently working on a further series for HAT to be launched in the spring.
HAT were very much encouraged by how more and more subject leaders are recognising the value of HAT's archive and work and promoting HAT as an important resource to support their students' education. Their appetite for more contextualised content from HAT was one of the subjects for group discussions at the end of the summit lead by Dr Helen Powell resulting in some very positive, interesting ideas and feedback from delegates many of which would be as joint initiatives. HAT are now looking to prioritise and take forward these ideas.
More updates on educational projects and resources will be reported by HAT as they develop. If you are a teacher in Higher or Secondary Education and would like to be informed of HAT's future Education Summits then please contact Jane Jarvis,
