Ad-Memoire, already successful in care organisations and hospitals, is now available for families and individuals in the app’s new ‘One to One’ package.

Featuring vintage TV ads from the 50s to the 70s of iconic British brands such as Butlins, Guinness and Heinz, History of Advertising Trust (HAT) releases ‘Ad-Memoire: One to One’ – an easily downloadable app providing a fun-filled reminiscence resource geared to stimulate memories and a welcome feeling of nostalgia for friends and family to share this Christmas and for years to come.

Ad-Memoire has become a valued reminiscence activity in care organisations and hospitals, particularly for residents and patients living with dementia who have been empowered to recall and discuss long-term memories prompted by familiar adverts and brands. This new ‘One to One’ package is the perfect gift for families and individual carers, who can help loved ones rediscover the catchy jingles and slogans, and inspire conversations and fond memories of how we used to live, work and play.

The app is easily downloadable to both Android and Apple tablets, phones and laptops. With a selection of specially curated themed TV ad reels to play at your fingertips, including ‘Sweets & Chocolates’, ‘Holidays’, ‘Breakfast’ and ‘Motoring’, Ad-Memoire will prompt memories of the products themselves as well as the fashions, technologies and conventions of the era. Going forward, the app will also be updated with further themed content and ads from more recent decades.

Dr Sarah Housden, Associate Professor in Health Sciences at the University of East Anglia, who advised on the development of Ad-Memoire, said the app would be:

“An ideal gift for many older people, and of value to everyone who knows them, this resource has potential for stimulating interactions which recognise the place of the past, in the present, for every person.

Ad-Memoire: One to One’ provides a focus and support for person-centred interactions which draw upon shared and individual memories. Short clips of selected film in combination with ideas for conversation starters, can be used to generate discussions which will engage the users in sharing their lifelong memories. Through such discussions younger family members, friends and carers can better understand and value the life experiences of older people. I recommend this resource as a great way of stimulating meaningful interactions between people of all abilities, as well as across generations”.

The full version of the app, which includes group activities such as ‘Brand Bingo’ and exclusive monthly updates, is available for care homes, hospitals and day care centres and has already had an enthusiastic uptake.

Liz Yaxley, Head of Dementia Services, Norfolk & Norwich NHS Foundation Trust said:

“The Dementia Support Team at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital thoroughly enjoy using Ad-Memoire with our patients who are living with dementia. Watching old TV adverts together is a great conversation starter, engaging and fun.  It is wonderful to see happy memories and laughter replacing worries or discomfort and how empowering it can be for our patients. – this app has surpassed our expectations”

Jane Jarvis, Ad-Memoire’s Project Manager, explains:

“TV Ads are made to be short, memorable and mostly fun and we all talk about them! HAT’s archive collections from the last 70 years or so also represent a barometer of our social history like short mini films charting how we used to live our lives. Seeing them on Ad-Memoire unlocks so many fond memories for people. It is so good to be putting our incredible archive to work to make a positive difference to peoples’ lives.”

Ad-Memoire features adverts from the collections at The History of Advertising Trust. Founded in 1976 as a registered educational charity, HAT preserves the heritage of UK brand communication with an archive containing around 500,000 broadcast quality commercials and print advertisements that date back to the 1800s.
