Saving the 70s

Drawing from its extensive TV commercial library, HAT has researched and compiled a special selection from the 1970s on a set of two DVDs. These have been distributed to ten partner museums across Suffolk and Hertfordshire where the commercials are being screened to local communities. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, this project addresses the need for more contemporary collecting policies in local museums and provides an opportunity to inspire and engage people of all ages in the cultural and social history of the period. In partnership with Halesworth & District Museum, HAT Director Chloe Veale delivered a talk at the town’s arts centre The Cut on Friday 16 May. Chloe guided the audience through a cavalcade of 60 TV and cinema commercials from across the 1970s decade on the centre’s state-of-the-art cinema screen. As ever John Webster’s popular BMP creation, the Smash Martians, had everyone chuckling in the aisles.

Afterwards Martina and Arthur Calver wrote in to HAT:

“Watching the old adverts was highly entertaining and brought back lots of happy memories. Your accompanying talk was informative and thought provoking too and we were glad that we came along. Thanks again for putting together such a good show!

HAT is also planning a 1970s Heritage Open Day on 12 September this year in partnership with Norwich HEART. Further details about how to book a place will be published in HAT’s next newsletter.
