All Over the World: 200 Years of Colman’s Mustard
An exhibition to celebrate a unique Norwich brand
Fusion Digital Gallery, The Forum Norwich
10th – 22nd November 2014
On 7th May 1814, the
Norfolk Chronicle announced that Jeremiah Colman had taken the stock and trade of a mustard mill in stoke Holy Cross, Norwich. 2014 marks the 200th anniversary of the brand the Jeremiah founded, known today simply as Colman’s.

To mark this momentous occasion HAT has collaborated with
Norwich HEART and
Colman’s Mustard Shop & Museum , the
East Anglian Film Archive, the
Unilever Archives and the
Norwich Forum to create an exhibition that explores and documents the global impact of a unique Norwich brand, and the people who forged it.
The display plots the key points that metamorphosed this small, family-run business. Spectators can learn about wartime Colman’s, the role of mustard in medicine and food history, the company’s revolutionary attitudes towards advertising and its worldwide impact. The display will be complimented by a range of talks and activities.
Chloe Veale HAT’s Director says: “
It is a great privilege to be participating in a heritage project that is so close to the hearts of Norfolk people whose livelihoods have depended on the success of the Colman’s brand for over two centuries. This is a great opportunity to showcase HAT’s remarkable advertising collections within the context of the whole Colman’s story.”
