HAT holds a unique and substantial reference library of over 6,000 specialist books, directories, journals, themed compilations and press cuttings covering every aspect of UK advertising, brand communications marketing and media.

There are over 250 titles of the principal UK advertising and marketing industry magazines and journals, dating from the late 19th century to the present day, as well as a small selection of magazines from Europe and the United States. Amongst these are Advertising World (1902-1921), The Advertiser's Weekly (1922-1974), Campaign (1968-present) and Marketing (1982-present). Sample runs of consumer magazines available for contextual campaign and advertisement searches include Harmsworth, The Sphere, Picture Post, Punch, Sunday Times Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Good Housekeeping, House & Garden and Family Circle. A small collection of newspapers, dating from the 1790s to recent years, also document nationally significant events and contemporary press advertising.

There is also an extensive collection of advertising planning reports, statistical information, readership surveys, advertising expenditure analysis, market research and consumer trends data dating from the 1920s up to the present day.

HAT wishes to thank the many generous donors who have contributed gifts of books and journals to the reference library. If you would like to make a gift to the library collections please contact the Archive & Library Collections Manager enquiries@hatads.org.uk.
