Admin History: Thawpit was a proprietary grease solvent (main ingredient: carbon tetrachloride) or stain remover. Thawpit Limited manufactured a number of products for domestic use. Among these were: Thawpit, Thawzone (bleach), Thawscale (fur remover for kettles), Rust remover, Thorpe's All Purpose Cleaner, Thorpe's Washing Soda, Thorpe's Household soap, Thorpe's Liquid Detergent and Thorpe's Turpentine and Turps Substitute. Captain Thomas Edward Thorpe was the Managing Director of Thawpit Limited and ran the company production line from the back yard of his house in North London. Thawpit was the only product that JWT were required to advertise, although they also designed labels for Thawzone and Turpentine, a pack for Washing Soda and a leaflet for Thawpit and Thawscale. JWT acquired the Thawpit account in 1934 and had resigned it by 1953 (source: Advertiser's Annual). For more detail on the Thawpit operation see 'Reflections on an Agency' by Peter Yeo, p.36.
