Admin History: 'Washes Whiter' was a five part documentary focusing on the changing face of British television advertising (1955-1990). During the course of production, researchers obtained commercials directly from brands and advertising agencies and then compiled them onto 1 inch tapes used to create the programmes themselves.
The five parts of the series are as follows:
Part one: 'She's not a moron-she's your wife': Adverts for cleaning, shopping and cooking products.
Part two: Big! Big! Big!: The portrayal of men in advertising.
Part three: 'Buy some for Lulu': The changing face of children in adverts.
Part four: 'Sixpence worth of heaven': How fantasy and aspiration were to sell products.
Part five: 'The getaway people': How advertising in post-war Britain can be viewed as a measure of shifts in national mood.
