In the late 1920s Barrus entered the marine outboard market by importing Johnson and Lycoming marine engines. In the 1930s Barrus went into the automotive market by supplying garage tools and equipment. During the Second World War Barrus supplied precision tools and engines to the UK war department. In the 1950s and 1960s Barrus entered the lawnmower market and pioneered the supply of 'ride-on' motors in the UK. JWT acquired the Barrus account to advise primarily on the advertising of Johnson Outboard motors.
